Built to Celebrate: 50 Years of Shelter Systems

SHELTER SYSTEMS

When a third-generation, family-owned company reaches its 50th anniversary, the celebration should feel like more than a company picnic.

Shelter Systems, a Maryland-based manufacturer of floor and roof trusses, had an internal planning team, an important milestone, and plenty of ideas. What they needed was the bandwidth and expertise to turn those ideas into one cohesive experience, and to manage the considerable production infrastructure required to make it happen.

Cover Paige Creative came aboard as the creative and production partner for the eight-month engagement, leading the celebration from concept through execution. The assignment touched nearly every layer of the experience: creative strategy, environmental design, historical storytelling, custom fabrication, food and beverage, entertainment, AV, infrastructure, vendor management, logistics, budgeting, and onsite production.

But before we designed the experience, we looked at what Shelter Systems had spent 50 years building.

50 Years, Built Into the Experience

THE CHALLENGE

Celebrate the milestone without losing the company behind it.

Shelter Systems wasn't looking for a generic anniversary event. This was an opportunity to celebrate five decades of craftsmanship, growth, employees, family, customers, and community, all on the grounds where the work actually happens.

The experience needed to accommodate employees and their families, clients, community members, and invited guests while transforming an active industrial campus into a welcoming, festival-style environment.

And because the client's internal team still had their regular jobs to do, CPC needed to do more than develop the creative.

We needed to build the machine behind it.

THE CPC DIFFERENCE

We don't decorate around a brand. We look for the story already inside it.

For Shelter Systems, inspiration was everywhere: exposed lumber, engineering drawings, metal connector plates, roof and floor trusses, archival photographs, the manufacturing floor—and 50 years of people building something together.

Rather than layering an unrelated anniversary theme over the company, CPC made Shelter Systems itself the theme.

THE IDEA

Make what they build part of how they celebrate.

The company's craft became the creative throughline for the entire experience. CPC conceived a family of custom truss-inspired scenic plinths, reaching approximately six feet in height, to frame the stage and bring Shelter Systems' architectural language directly into the event environment.

At center stage, a custom-fabricated dimensional 50th-anniversary logo created the visual anchor for the formal program, surrounded by greenery and natural materials that softened the industrial aesthetic while keeping the company's craft front and center.

The concept carried into the smallest details. Even the custom anniversary cake referenced Shelter Systems' world through architectural drawings, anniversary branding, and details inspired by the metal connector plates used in its trusses. The result wasn't themed around Shelter Systems. It looked and felt like Shelter Systems.

TURNING HISTORY INTO EXPERIENCE

A timeline guests could actually walk through.

Fifty years of history deserved more than a poster on a wall. CPC conceived a walkable historical timeline that allowed guests to physically move through Shelter Systems' five decades of growth, milestones, people, and projects. We designed the timeline graphics from scratch, combining archival photographs, historical materials, engineering imagery, company milestones, and storytelling into a cohesive visual system.

Those graphics were then incorporated into custom freestanding wooden structures whose materiality and construction once again referenced the company's core business. CPC creatively directed and supervised the fabrication so that the storytelling and physical environment worked as one experience. Guests weren't simply being told that Shelter Systems had been around for 50 years. They could walk through those 50 years.

MAKING THE CREATIVE PROCESS PART OF THE EVENT

A six-foot blank canvas became a live activation.

CPC also wanted the anniversary identity to become something guests could watch evolve in real time. We conceived a custom, six-foot dimensional logo structure and commissioned an artist to transform the piece during the event. Rather than simply displaying finished artwork, the act of creating it became the activation.

Guests could watch the artist work throughout the celebration as the piece gradually transformed, adding movement, curiosity, entertainment, and another layer of storytelling to the environment.

By the end of the event, Shelter Systems was left with something more than event décor: a custom commemorative artwork created during the celebration itself that now hangs in the interior of their offices.

THE EXPERIENCE

Part company milestone. Part music festival. Entirely Shelter Systems.

Surrounding the historical and brand storytelling, CPC developed a relaxed, festival-inspired guest experience that gave attendees multiple ways to explore, eat, gather, play, and celebrate. The event incorporated a curated food-and-beverage program, beer and wine service, grazing experiences, music and DJ entertainment, giant lawn games, interactive activations, live art, anniversary programming, and spaces for guests to connect throughout the campus.

CPC managed the production partners required to support it all—from food trucks, catering and beverage partners to AV, tents and furniture, restroom and handwashing infrastructure, entertainment, security, artists, rentals, power requirements, and other event services. The polished guest experience was the visible result.

The production system underneath it was just as important.

THE PRODUCTION BEHIND THE PRODUCTION

The work your guests never see, and your internal team shouldn't have to manage.

A successful event isn't just a collection of good vendors.

Someone has to make all of those vendors function as one production.

CPC built and managed the operational infrastructure behind the celebration: researching and vetting partners, comparing options, developing and reviewing menus, coordinating contracts, collecting Certificates of Insurance and W-9s, tracking deposits and final balances, monitoring budgets, confirming service requirements, documenting onsite contacts, managing arrival and load-in information, coordinating site placement, and following up—again and again—until the details were closed.

BEHIND THE BUILD

Concepted by CPC. Built by local partners. Creatively directed through execution.

The stage plinths, anniversary logo, live-art structure, historical timeline, environmental graphics, and other custom details required multiple creative and fabrication partners.

CPC developed the concepts, created original graphic assets where applicable, sourced and collaborated with production partners, and supervised the builds to protect the creative intent from idea through installation.

Because a great rendering is only valuable if the finished piece actually delivers.

We conducted multiple site walks, maintained recurring planning meetings with the client team, built production schedules and coordinated the moving parts required to transform an active manufacturing campus into an event environment. This is the work that rarely appears in finished-event photography. It's also a major reason clients hire CPC.
